Judy was born on September 3rd, 1931 to Edwin Slover Culwell and Julia Annette Culwell. She was the youngest of 6 sisters, affectionately called "the beautiful sisters." Described in the yearbook as "charming and fun loving," she represented Weatherford High school as the sophomore "Hi-Y Sweetheart" in 1946. Additionally, she served on the student council, Melon Vine, Future Homemakers of America, and as a twirler for the band.
An excellent student, with the financial support and encouragement of her sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Art and Gloria Rutledge, Judy earned a degree in Education at the University of North Texas, where she was also active in Greek life.
On August 9th, 1952, Judy married her high school sweetheart, her Johnny, with whom she welcomed two sweet daughters in the coming years. A loyal wife, Judy cared for the girls as he served his country as a Marine in Korea, and later followed Johnny as he served in the Marine reserves and pursued his coaching career.
Ultimately settling in Weatherford, Judy taught elementary school for 28 years and served as an officer in the Retired Teacher Association. With a fantastic eye for stylishness, she indulged her creativity buying and selling timeless antique furniture pieces through "Julia's Antiques."
Judy also served the church in various roles as a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Weatherford, including singing in the choir, teaching a women's Sunday School class, and as an active member of her much loved Sunday school group.
In retirement, Judy cared for her adoring grandchildren, made social calls to friends, accompanied "Pops" to many a grandchild's sporting event, and could usually be found sitting next to him watching a Ranger's game or gathered around the supper table for a game of dominoes.
If there was a 'Homemaker Hall of Fame,' Judy would be in it. With her ability to create mouthwatering baked goods, her mix of simple sophistication and cozy aesthetics, her kind smile and the crinkle of her eyes, and the warmth of her care and full presence, Judy carried the feeling of home with her to her last days.
In 2010, Judy, along with her husband John, was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the Weatherford Independent School District for her service as a public school educator.
Through 65 years of marriage, John never failed to bring a smile and a laugh to Judy's face, and in the years since his passing he visited her memories often. "Mama Moe" and "Pops" served as an institution for their family and, for those who knew them, an embodiment of the fruits of the spirit. They leave a legacy of humble service and generosity towards one another and their community.
Judy is survived by daughters, Leslie Evans, and Linda McCasland and husband, Roger; grandchildren, Jeremy McCasland, Grant McCasland and wife, Cece, Josh McCasland and wife, Melissa, Sara Graves and husband, Chance, Steffi Entzminger and husband, Kyle, Abbey Evans, Katie Woodley and husband, Luke, and children Josie, Shep, Reece, & Addie; great-grandchildren, Cooper McCasland and wife, Andie, Tatum McCasland, Amaris McCasland, Jett McCasland, Jersey McCasland, Beckett McCasland, Ryder Graves, River Graves, Liam Entzminger, Raleigh Entzminger, and Rowyn Entzminger; and great great-grandchild, Grey McCasland; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
