James Elmer Abbott

James Elmer Abbott, 90, died Oct. 6, 2010.. Service is 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. David Wilkins officiating, assisted by Rev. Tommy Pophin. Burial will be at Woodland Park Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home.. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Randy Walker, Joe Dougherty, Kelly Barton, Randy Gartman, Mike Whiteley, Ed Creed and Keith Dodd. Honorary pallbearers are his great-grandsons, Devin Dougherty, Ben Smith, Brandon Gartman, Brycen Gartman, Clay Johns, Jake Monroe, Max Creed, Sam Creed, Garrett Dodd and Joel Dodd.. James Abbott was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Whitt, Texas. He married the love of his life, Dean Abbott, on April 19, 1952. They have three children, Karen and husband, Paul, Walker of Palo Pinto; Glenda and husband, Tommy, Tomerlin, of Midland, Texas; and Lloyd and wife, Dawn, Creed of Lone Camp. They were blessed with seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.. J.E. loved Jesus, family, friends and his calico cats. He was preceded in death by his cats, Prissy and Muffin, and survived by his precious cat Candy. He had many loving nicknames. All of his grandchildren called him Papa and many of his friends called him Mr. Peck. At age 3 he picked several hands full of peas, roots and all, and made himself a pillow under a big shade tree in the field to take a nap. He was called "Pea Picker" from that day on.. Pea Picker drove an ambulance in Germany in WWII, worked as a butcher at Southside Grocery in Graham, Texas, and retired from Edo Air Mitchell in Mineral Wells in 1981, where the girls changed his name to Mr. Peck.. He was a wonderful husband and loved his wife very much. He had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter, who led him to the Lord, and Bro. Tommy, who baptized him. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and loved the ladies who met at his house every Wednesday for Bible study.. J.E. was preceded in death by his parents Laura and Chester Abbott and his brother O.B. Abbott and sister Adeline Brooks.. Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

Orders placed in:

January - May

Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.

June - December

Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
