Funeral Mass for Raymond F. Vargas, 78, of Lamesa will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at 2 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church with Father Rudy Crasta officiating.
Interment will follow in Dawson County Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, and Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at 7 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home Chapel.
Raymond passed away on Feb. 8, 2017, in Lubbock. He was born on Feb. 24, 1938, in Karnes City, Texas to Manuel F. and Anita Vargas. He served in the United States Army Texas National Guard 36 Infantry Division from 1955-1974. He married Alice Rodriguez on Sept. 10, 1956 in Lovington, New Mexico. They were married 60 years. While they visited Jerusalem they renewed their vows. He began working at the age of 17 at Lamesa Tire & Battery. He also worked for Shook Tire and was co-owner of Quality Tire. In 1989, he became owner of Lamesa Tire & Battery. His passion was serving his customers. Over the past years Raymond and Alice have enjoyed traveling, visiting the Jordan River and many European countries. He loved to spend time at his home, "The Flying V Ranch," where he loved taking care of his farm animals. Raymond and Alice enjoyed hosting field trips for the local public school children. He and his wife shared their garden with Dawson County Senior Citizens and the general public. He was a past member of the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He was an active member of the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce. He was also a lifetime member of St. Margaret Mary's Church of Lamesa.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Alice Vargas, of Lamesa; children, Teresa Rodriguez and husband, Ronnie, of Lamesa, Freddie Vargas and wife, Maria Alicia, of Lamesa, Lisa Gonzales and husband, Albert, of Lamesa, Irma Ramirez, and husband, Robert, of Lamesa, Anthony Vargas and wife, Brenda Gomez, of Irving; sisters, Rosa Martinez, of Alvarado, Lydia O'Neal and husband, Patrick, of Sweetwater, Andrea Medina and husband, Felix, of Lamesa, Anita Carrion and husband, Danny, of Lamesa, and Yolanda Flores, and husband, Julio Flores, of Lamesa; brothers, Ruben Vargas and wife, Oralia, of Midland and Martin Vargas and wife, Julia, of Weatherford; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Raymond Vargas Jr. on March 22, 2008; and brother, Felipe Vargas.
