Lonetta "Nita" Durham Carnley, 96, of Seagraves, Texas, passed peacefully on Friday, December 15, 2017 in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on July 6, 1921 in the Toto Community of Parker County, north of Weatherford, Texas.
In late December 1936, Nita married Earnest Carnley. Together they had 2 children, Earnest Garland, "Sonny", and Freddie Ray. In 2007, after 67 years of marriage, Nita's husband, Earnest, passed away after a brief illness. Her eldest child, Sonny, married Lynda Sealy. Both Sonny and her grandson, Garland Keith, were lost by accidental death due to a boating accident in 1968. Nita's younger son, Freddie, passed away after a battle with cancer in 2011. Surviving are Nita's sister, Mary Etta Collier, 86, of Crane, Texas; Four grandchildren: Tracey Carnley, of Hughes Springs, Texas; Troy Carnley (wife, Randi) of Lubbock, Texas; Trudy Taylor (husband, Ricky) of Hughes Springs, Texas; Reece Carnley, of Houston, Texas; Eight great-grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; and one nephew.
Nita and Earnest moved to Brown?eld in the South Plains of West Texas in 1941 to farm cotton. Nita spent countless hours tending her vegetable and ?ower gardens, and many more hours preserving the fruits of her labors. After many successful years of farming around the area, Nita and Earnest retired, sold their equipment, and moved to Seagraves, Texas, where they became members of the First Baptist Church of Seagraves. After retirement, Nita and Earnest traveled through Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas to their favorite ?shing spots in their camper, and in their later years, Nita and Earnest spent time with their longtime friends and neighbors at the Seagraves Senior Citizen Center. In 2015, Nita moved to Lubbock, Texas to be closer to family.
A memorial service organized by Ratliff Funeral Homes will be held on Monday, December 18 at 2:00 pm at the Ratliff Funeral home, 312 12th Street, Seagraves. Immediately thereafter, interment will take place at the Terry County Memorial Cemetery, County Road 430, Brown?eld, Texas.
